What path are you on?
Monday, January 4, 2010 at 7:42AM During our last conversation about new year's resolutions, I suggested that achieving a goal is more about the path you are on than implementing a solution. It is a simple idea, but the distinction can have broad implications. Let me share a few thoughts...
- Every path leads to a particular destination. Do you know what path you are on right now? Will it lead to you being successful in attaining your new year's resolution? Is it leading you to the life you desire?
- When and where did you choose the path you are on right now? Was it a conscious choice? Or did you fail to make a choice and therefore you ended up on this path?
- Can you easily see where this path is leading you? We can deceive ourselves sometimes. Being as objective as you can, will this path take you to a destination of your choosing, a life without regret?
- What about the path you are on has grabbed your attention? Just like keeping your eyes on the road while driving, what holds our attention can determine our life's path. Do you have a distraction that is keeping you from putting your full attention to your new year's resolultion?
- Who can offer you wisdom as you travel your path? Most "successful" people - on just about whatever terms you can think of - give thanks for the support and guidance of others along their path. Who can be a mentor or coach to help you along your journey?
These can be hard questions to ask of yourself. I encourage you to give them some thought, but give yourself the same grace as you would give to your best friend.
