Who inspires you?
Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at 2:57PM Recently, I had the pleasure of hearing the founder of TOMS Shoes (toms.com), Blake Mycoskie, speak. (#wcagls) For every pair of TOMS shoes that is bought, this organization gives one away to a child who goes barefoot. Hearing the story of this social enterprise was so inspiring!!
I came home from the conference and told my husband that there has got to be other ways to make a real difference like this. He agreed and I think we are going to have ongoing conversations around this idea.
When I think about making an impact in the world, I believe there are three considerations to maximize success. First, find a way to apply the talents that are uniquely yours to a situation you want to improve or a problem you want to solve. Second, communicate your intention to do this and watch for the opportunity. I believe the universe or God or the power that is greater than yourself, will deliver it to you. Be assertive and be patient at the same time. Finally, at some point - just go for it.
I found Blake's answer to the following question particularly insightful. He has been asked many times why he didn't just start a nonprofit organization. His response was that rather than use his initial financial investment to buy thousands of pairs of shoes, he invested that in a business that now is self-sustaining and has in 4 years given out six hundred thousand pairs of shoes to children who needed them.
I haven’t bought my pair of Toms Shoes yet, but you can believe that I will!
Also, I will participate in the “Go Barefoot for a Day” campaign next April. Sometimes we need a reminder to know how blessed we truly are.
