2015: Your Year to Volunteer

The end of a calendar year provides the perfect time to reflect on where we’ve been and the wonderful people, experiences and sources of joy in our lives.  Lately, many of the people I have been speaking with are paying that forward through volunteering.  Whether serving at a community dinner, helping with a Christmas pageant or concert, donating toys, food and money to those who aren’t as fortunate this year, there are many, many opportunities to share what we have with others.

Volunteering has always been a part of my life and I hope through modelling that my children will find it to be an important part of theirs now and in the future.  I volunteer to help others, but I have to say, I get a lot in return too.  Lending a hand and using your skills can lead to talent development, personal connections with new people, learning, broadening of perspective and feeling more involved in one’s community.  Not to mention, it provides great joy and an excellent return on the investment.

So, I’d like to challenge you to find out how you can elevate your volunteerism this holiday season and in the year to come.  With a little effort, you can find the right organization and the perfect role that fits your life today.  Make 2015 your year to volunteer!
